1. The Deck and Its History
The Petit Lenormand deck descends from the German "Game of Hope" (Das Spiel der Hoffnung), published around 1799 — a parlour game of 36 illustrated squares. After the death of Marie Anne Lenormand, the most famous fortune-teller of Napoleonic Paris, in 1843, publishers reissued the trimmed deck under her name. It became the standard cartomancy deck of continental Europe and remains so today — especially in Germany (Kartenlegen) and France, where Lenormand still outsells tarot in many shops.
Unlike tarot, the deck has no major or minor arcana, no suits and no reversals. All 36 cards are equal citizens; meaning emerges from their combinations, and two of them — Man (28) and Woman (29) — represent the people in the reading.

7. The Person Cards: Man and Woman
Cards 28 (Man) and 29 (Woman) are the significators — the only cards that represent people directly. Traditionally the querent is represented by the card matching their gender, and the other card stands for their partner or a key person. As Caitlín Matthews explains in "The Complete Lenormand Oracle Handbook", where the significator falls relative to other cards — facing them, backed by them, near or far — shapes the entire reading in larger layouts.
In a small spread, simply note when a person card appears: the matter is strongly tied to that person. Heart + Man says a man is in love; Woman + Fox points to a woman at work — or a cautious, self-interested one.
